Department of Anesthesiology - Overview

The UA Department of Anesthesiology provides the full spectrum of clinical anesthesiology services at the Arizona Health Sciences Center. These include both major and minor operating room anesthesia, consultation services in airway management and vascular access, preoperative patient assessment and optimization, emergency resuscitation, and critical care medicine. In addition, the department operates a comprehensive acute and chronic pain service including an outpatient pain clinical service and consultation service for other departments. The department provides expertise in all subspecialties of anesthesiology, including acute pain service, ambulatory, cardiovascular, chronic pain management, critical care medicine, neurosurgical, obstetric, pediatric, trauma and transplantation. Major areas of research include inhalation anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, central mechanisms of anesthesia, resuscitation, cardiopulmonary monitoring, and pain management. Our Department has 47 full-time faculty and 41 residents. Many of our faculty are involved in our research programs supported by the NIH and numerous private industry sources.

Pain Management

The Department of Anesthesiology operates a comprehensive acute and chronic pain service including an outpatient pain clinical service and consultation service for other departments. The department provides expertise in all subspecialties of anesthesiology, including cardiovascular, obstetric, neurosurgical, pediatric, transplantation, trauma, intensive care, and pain management. Major areas of research include inhalation anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, central mechanisms of anesthesia, resuscitation, cardiopulmonary monitoring, and pain management.  The  Acute Pain Service and Chronic Pain Management Center are based at the Southern Arizona Veterans Hospital and the Northwest La Cholla Physician Center.

UA College of Medicine

The UA College of Medicine is a cornerstone of the Arizona Health Sciences Center (Arizona's only academic health sciences center) based on the campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson. AHSC is situated on approximately 45 acres of the UA campus. It includes the UA Colleges of Medicine (Tucson and Phoenix-BioMedical Campus), Nursing, Pharmacy and the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, as well as The University of Arizona Medical Center — University Campus, the primary teaching hospital for the College, and the second teaching hospital, The University of Arizona Medical Center — South Campus

The University of Arizona currently sponsors 42 accredited residency programs in all major specialties and subspecialties. More than 500 residents and fellows train at our primary teaching hospital, University Medical Center. We also utilize 14 other major participating institutions. The College of Medicine has 20 departments and 10 centers dedicated to specific areas of research, clinical care and teaching. Full-time faculty members number more than 600 and all faculty, including part-time and volunteer, total more than 1,600.   UA College of Medicine

100 AHSC Physicians Among 'Best Doctors in America’

More than 100 Tucson physicians affiliated with the Arizona Health Sciences Center are included in the latest Best Doctors in America database. This database, compiled for more than 20 years by Best Doctors, Inc., includes about 45,000 U.S. physicians in more than 40 specialties and 400 subspecialties of medicine. They represent the top 3 to 5 percent of specialists in the country. The list is based on a biennial survey of tens of thousands of leading physicians who were asked whom they would go to for treatment in their own specialty. The 2011-2012 database includes more than 400 Tucson physicians, of whom about 100 are affiliated with the Arizona Health Sciences Center.  Most are on the faculty of the University of Arizona College of Medicine and practice at University Medical Center, University Physicians Hospital and Clinics at Kino Campus and at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System.
